A short hiatus
It's been a while, I know. Well... the truth is that I've been moving. I FINALLY got my new office all moved in and cool looking. It's up and running and spitting out quality work in the name of Hat Digital Media. But on top of that, I also moved into my new apartment!
I'm living in Houston now, off of T.C. Jester. It's about 10 minutes from my office on a bad day. Sweet, huh? Of course, the short commute is STILL about 10 minutes longer than it was when I was working from home full time! But I have to say, there's something about having a space outside the home, one dedicated entirely to work, that helps put you in a working mindset.
One good thing to come out of all this is a very clear separation of work and home. It was getting to the point that every waking moment was work for me. Now, I feel like when I leave the office I can relax. Of course, that's deceptive. I still DO work from home... writing, mostly. But at least I'm able to put it aside for a few hours a day and just have a normal home life. I still feel guilty at times...
My relationship with Kara is still GREAT. I love her... she's everything I was looking for and some stuff I didn't realize was on the list! We've been together now since Easter. We spend a LOT of time together, talking on the phone, whatever. She's been a rock for me during all this turmoil and upheaval. I don't know what it would have been like if she hadn't been there helping me! I'm a man who doesn't like change... and my life has been nothing BUT change for the past few months!
On top of moving me, I also had to move my mom. We were splitting two halves of a duplex house in West Columbia, so when I moved she didn't feel comfortable with the idea of a stranger moving in next door. She got a place in Angleton - a new apartment complex that opened up there. It's VERY nice. A little pricey, but livable.
Mia is doing great in the new apartment. One of the problems I had up front was finding a place for her litter box. This occupied a considerable amount of my brain power for a couple of months before the move. Where to put a stinky box of cat poo...? I finally decided on the closet in my home office (I still have one, yes). I'll have to keep it pretty clean to keep the smell down, but it's the only space I could find that wasn't in the middle of everything.
I had a meeting yesterday with David Dodson and Mick Handloser. We're rolling out a new plan for advertising on ViewOnline. I have a lot of big plans for the site, and this is the first step. If our plans work, ViewOnline should become a primary source of income for me and Dave. That would free me up to make some of the changes and improvements I wanted to make to the site, plus give me more financial flexibility in my other businesses (three and growing!).
So that's the update for now. I'm sorry it's been a while since I blogged. But I'm back on track now, I hope.
Be sure to read my column at www.viewonline.com! I'm back to updating every week again, so check back often!
