Getting Small to Go Big

You know how you can tell when you're really serious about something? There are a few "tells."

You make time for it. That's a biggie. Because we're kind of overprotective of our time.

You talk about it—a lot.

You do things related to it. In other words, you take action, instead of just talking.

That's the way things have been going since Kara and I decided to start this RV life adventure. We talk about this almost constantly now. But beyond the talk, we're also doing things.

For instance, my house is a wreck right now. There are boxes everywhere, and piles of stuff in every room (including my once pristine office). There's a ton of stuff to sort through for selling online, selling in a garage sale, donating to charity, or just hauling away to that great storage bin in the sky. The stuff we plan to put in long-term storage is piling up, but to our credit the pile is smaller than it once would have been.

We're doing this.

The plan is to get the house cleared of the excess, do whatever work needs to be done to the house itself, and put this girl on the market by the end of June. The hope is that, like other homes in our neighborhood, it will sell within a week or so of putting it on the market. And the dream is that it will bring in the kind of money that falls under the heading of "life changing," allowing us to pay off some long-standing debts and get our financial life in shape.

It's a lot of work. And normally, I think Kara and I would completely avoid it. Because though we both have insane work ethics, when it comes to our home we always just want to "exist." We want to be able to relax and enjoy the place, not constantly have projects that need to be done.

That's part of why I think this move "into the green" is going to be so good for us. It's chance for us to catch our breath, to catch up with life a bit. We are changing our lifestyle in numerous ways—downsizing the amount and volume of just stuff we own, minimizing where we can, and also changing our eating and exercise habits. Because well ... there's enough Kevin to go around, if you know what I'm sayin'.

I'm sayin' I'm fat. Get your mind out of the gutter.

So we're downsizing the home, downsizing the the body, and downsizing our overhead. All so we can get into a bigger, better lifestyle in the big, beautiful world.

It is going to be fantastic.

As soon as I can get this mess cleaned up.
